How It Works & Governing Formulas

Power Factor (PF) represents the phase angle difference between voltage and current. Improving PF reduces reactive power demand (kVAr), lowers line current, and prevents electrical utility penalties.

Mathematical Equations:

1. Active Power P (kW): P = (√3 × V × I × PF₁) / 1000
2. Required Capacitor Bank Size Qc (kVAr): Qc = P × [ tan(cos⁻¹(PF₁)) - tan(cos⁻¹(PF₂)) ]
3. New Reduced Line Current I₂ (Amps): I₂ = I₁ × (PF₁ / PF₂)
  • PF₁ / PF₂: Initial (Current) and Target (Desired) Power Factors.
  • I₁ / I₂: Original Current vs Reduced Line Current after correction.
  • Qc: Required Capacitive Power to correct phase displacement.
